A Boy’s Dream
Written as a commission for the Palmetto Consortium of South Carolina, this expansive work explores the delight, wonderment and excitement of a young boy’s hopes and dreams. Several stylistic elements combine to depict various emotions and imaginings. In the words of the composer, “a boy’s dreams are fantastical and mysterious, show great curiosity and yet most importantly, they are innocent and credulous.” A terrific and fresh work for winds! Aegina and Bacchanalia (from Spartacus)
Reflecting colorful orchestration techniques and the influence of native Armenian classical traditions, Spartacus was one Khachaturian’s hugely successful ballets (along with Gayane). Along an English Countryside
Composed in 12/8 and entirely in one energetic tempo, this masterful work is a musical tribute to the late Sir Malcolm Arnold, one of the most notable English composers of our time. The opening section features a variety of short solo statements of the theme, which then leads to well-timed and impressive declarations from the entire ensemble. Within in the confines of this brief yet impressive work, Richard manages to skillfully capture feelings of both seriousness and playfulness. Along an English Countryside is wonderful as a program opener for festival or contest.SKU: HL04003201 -

Ancient Desert Drone
Ancient Desert Drone was composed for orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch “drone” throughout the work (similar to Grainger’s own The Immovable Do) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. This transcription for band is an exotic and welcome addition to the repertoire for winds. Aria Della Battaglia
The current edition of Gabrieli’s Aria Della Battaglia was transcribed for the modern orchestra wind section from the Canto Dialoghi Musicali de Diversi Eccelentissimi Autori: Venice 1590. The work is subtitled “per sonare d’instrumenti da fiato” (“to be played by wind instruments”) and is one in a long line of such descriptive works dating from the sixteenth century with no instrumental designation whatsoever. The popularity of this genre, however, did not fade with the close of the Renaissance. Rather, a rich development continued into the nineteenth century with Beethoven’s Wellington’s Victory, the so-called “Battle Symphony,” being a latter-day example.SKU: AL29639 -

Art in the Park
Art in the Park is a four-movement work that musically portrays various styles and techniques used in the visual arts. Musical representations of high energy cubism, dreamy impressionistic aquarelle, the nobility and subtle shadings of chiaroscuro, and a percussion ensemble’s rendition of a sgraffito are included, with the orchestration designed to depict the style of the brushstrokes in each painting. This is a very unusual piece with highly diverse content! (8:30)SKU: AL29479 -

Beyond Whistler
The closing movement from the Sea to Sky Suite is “Beyond Whistler.” After whisking down this highest and most treacherous of slopes, the listener stops to view what lies beyond. This movement is finalized with a long, slow build to the climax, again using the motif that is present throughout the entire suite. It is to be performed with a great sense of wonder and excitement, with a gradual build to the end. A grand conclusion to this dynamic suite. Also consider programming the first three movements: “March: The Lion’s Gate” (26772), “Shannon Falls” (26773) and “Stawamus Chief” (29630). (7:10)SKU: AL29631 -

Cambrian Explosion
The Cambrian period of our planet’s geological history (roughly 500 million years ago) saw an explosion of plant and animal diversity evolving into many of the complex life forms familiar today. Richard Saucedo gives us an “explosion” of musical forms and surprises in this fast-paced and powerful work for mature bands. A recurring mallet and timpani pattern provides unity amidst a diverse musical palette that ranges from jazzy to celebratory. The sudden appearance of the familiar hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth” is both stunning and dramatic as it ties the entire work together. Wonderfully creative! Dur: 3:10SKU: HL04003007 -

Cathedrals
Named the 2008 winner of the prestigious Frederick Fennell Prize for young composers (sponsored by ASCAP and CBDNA), Cathedrals by Kathryn Salfelder is a fantasy on Gabrieli’s Canzon Primi Toni from the “Sacrae Symphoniae,” which dates from 1597. The work is an ingenious synthesis of old and new, evoking the mystery and allure of Renaissance spatial music through the use of two brass choirs, and intertwined with a rich color palette, modal harmonies, and a variety of woodwind and percussion textures. A stunning addition to the wind band repertoire. Dur: 6:00 (Artist Level – Grade 5)Audio recording is a reading by the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble; Charles Peltz, conductor
