Pavane (Pour Une Infante Defunte)
This hauntingly beautiful piece is one of Maurice Ravel’s most popular piano works. Robert W. Smith’s transcription for winds contrasts a ‘music box’ effect in bells and triangle against the dynamic rise and fall of the winds. Written as a contest/festival/concert work, it will also serve as a warmup chorale. A great teaching piece!SKU: ALBD01096 -

Quintilian
Quintilian was inspired by the work of the ancient Roman philosopher and educator of the same name, who set forth the original seven liberal arts as the ideal curriculum for educated citizens. After a stirring Roman style fanfare, Mr. Smith uses a quintal theme in both harmony and rhythm to propel the work through its development to a highly dramatic conclusion. This work deserves your close attention! Riveting. (2:38)SKU: ALBD9860 -

Rising Dragons
Commissioned by the Korean Navy Symphonic Band under the direction of Lt. Commander Joon Hyung Park, Rising Dragons pays tribute to the legacy of Yi Sun Shin and his impact on naval operations throughout the world. Beginning with a commanding fanfare, the authoritative statement gives way to the lone flute representing the solitude and reflection that any great leader must endure. The mechanized sounds of the turtle ships are brought to musical life through melody that rises and falls like the sea. The sea battle is depicted with opposing forces of percussion giving way to a final victorious fanfare. A line from a poem written by Yi Sun Shin inspires the title: “I call to the sea, and the dragons are moved.”SKU: AL24783 -
