Starburst (Digital)
Starburst is a rousing overture that explodes with energy and effervescence. The idea of a starburst pattern (something bursting forth from a central source) inspired the composer to create a concert opener full of joy and excitement for all members of the band as well as the audience. The work is built on three elements: an opening flourish built on 4ths; a lively theme that uses chromaticism; and a brassy fanfare that develops into a fugue. These building blocks are developed throughout, with dynamic contrasts and a relentless drive. Commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band in honor of Douglas Macaulay’s 20th anniversary as music director, Starburst is a salute to the energy and inspiration of this fine musician. The Legend of Billy Miner
This composition reflects a colorful time in American history and is an opportunity for your band to discover ragtime rhythms. Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusual politeness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, “Hands up!” This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release. The artful interplay between sections gives this piece the sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced work. Dur: 3:35SKU: HL04005509
