Theme and Fugue from The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra
Originally composed to introduce the various instruments of the orchestra, Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide” follows a set of variations based on a melody by Henry Purcell. In this setting for wind band, Richard Saucedo presents the opening theme followed by Britten’s exuberant fugue which culminates in a glorious finale and recap of Purcell’s melody. Theme and Tirade
The opening of this unique work features a gentle and serene theme traded between clarinet, oboe and trumpet soloists played over a lush harmonic background. The mood shifts abruptly, however, as the “tirade” begins! A predominant timpani pattern helps propel this section through a series of angular passages, driving rhythmic figures, a jazz-tinged clarinet solo, and ultimately blossoming into a triumphant and glorious conclusion. Toccata Rhapsodic
Composed using a single moderate tempo, Toccata Rhapsodic is a study in articulation and phrasing for second year players. The piece cleverly combines elements of staccato at the same time other players are playing legato phrases, and encourages students to listen for the difference. Valley Montage and Celebration
This work for advanced band was commissioned by the Tennessee Valley Winds to celebrate the group’s 30th anniversary. The piece begins quietly with clarinet solo, then quickly moves to a celebratory section in 12/8 meter. The main melody is stated in many different voices as it steadily builds to a moment of controlled frenzy. A brief lyrical section features an expressive style and also a moment of glory for the entire woodwind choir. The work concludes with a return to the vibrant and enthusiastic flavor of the opening.
