Mill Mountain Vistas
This spirited composition for concert band is inspired by Mill Mountain, which is located on the outskirts of Roanoke, VA and provides a wonderful elevated view of both the city of Roanoke and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Of particular interest, the mountaintop contains a structure known as the Mill Mountain Star, the world’s largest freestanding illuminated man-made star, visible for 60 miles from the air and 1,045 feet above the city of Roanoke. Nemesis
The dictionary defines the word “nemesis” as: 1. goddess of divine retribution; 2. one that inflicts retribution or vengeance; 3. a formidable and usually victorious rival. This piece was written to convey the sense of the definition. Although the piece begins serenely, it soon ventures into a driving storm of contemporary rhythms and harmonies that continues until the end of the piece. A feeling of conflict between formidable musical forces permeates the piece; creating an exciting new work for young bands.SKU: AL22271 -

Paradiddles
Percussionists must learn both the rudiments and the scales. This piece provides the wind players some exposure to the rudiments. “Paradiddles” creates patterns played by the winds that mimic two types of paradiddles—the single paradiddle and the double paradiddle. This may be the first piece for concert band inspired by, and based on, percussion rudiments. (5:50)SKU: AL44207 -

Thus Spoke the Raven
Thus Spoke the Raven was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s dark and mysterious poem “The Raven.” Sounding particularly sophisticated for this grade level, the piece accurately depicts Poe’s poem in a fun and exciting musical setting. Slightly sinister sounding percussion begins the medium-tempo introduction, which leads into an energetic and driving “Allegro.” With the use of pulsing staccato accompaniments, exhilarating ostinato patterns, and stimulating syncopation, this piece has it all!SKU: AL19531
