African Dreams
William Kamkwamba was raised in Malawi, an African country where magical thoughts prevailed but modern technology was a mystery. From books he read, young William imagined building a windmill that might, one day, bring electricity and water to his village and drastically change the lives of his neighbors. Hoping to someday study science, his country was debilitated by famine that forced William to drop out of school and forage for food as thousands throughout the country died of starvation. However, William’s passion remained indefatigable and, using scrap metal, tractor parts, and bicycle halves, he ingeniously built a crude yet operable windmill that powered four lights and his radio. News of William’s achievement soon spread beyond his country’s borders, and the young boy who was once thought of as crazy became a hero to many around the world. (5:30)SKU: AL37840 -

Bayou Breakdown
This fun and whimsical work creates a piece that will provide musical and technical challenges for performers yet can be immediately enjoyed by the listener, musician, and non-musician alike. Starting with a four-part fugue scored for woodwinds, the work then moves to a folk song-like lyrical theme, then eventually back to the initial fugue. Country Gardens
Grainger’s first piano arrangement of this English morris dance tune was completed in 1918 as a birthday gift for his mother. It became extremely popular and was his greatest commercial and financial success. Even this simple tune displays his genius with harmony, counterpoint, and color. This very playable arrangement is an excellent way to introduce your students to the music of Percy Grainger! (2:10)SKU: AL39643 -

Slumber, My Darling
With music and lyrics both composed by Stephen Foster in 1862 its elegantly simple and lyrical melody allow for a variety of colors and textures including low woodwinds, predominant melodic material played by low brass and low woodwinds, solo voices, and flowing counterpoint. The contrasting interlude includes short quotes of other Foster songs and should carry the listener, not to sleep, but into a realm of exuberance and gratitude.SKU: AL24680 -

Spy Chase
“Spy Chase” evokes images of one’s favorite secret agent who is about to embark upon a mission placed deep in the field of crime, espionage, and corruption—and of course our hero will always have time for a little romance. The music will sound reminiscent by using familiar “spy chords,” a minor triad with added 6th or raised 7th, and the trademark chromaticism associated with the composer’s favorite spy movies.SKU: AL23305
