Hail the Champions
Commissioned for the University of Akron Symphonic Band, this dynamic work celebrates 100 years of music composed for the Olympic Games. Based on three primary themes, the first is a brilliant fanfare that serves as an introduction as well as a unifying link throughout. Second is the 1896 Olympic Hymn (music by Spyros Samaras) set in a beautiful lyric style which builds to a magnificent climax juxtaposed with the opening fanfare. The final section presents a new version of Mr. Curnow’s own Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and performed again in 2000. The dramatic closing is again combined with elements of the opening fanfare. Dur: c. 6:40(Recorded by the University of Akron Symphony Band – Dr. Galen S. Karriker, Director of Bands. Premiere performance conducted by James Curnow)

L’Esprit du Tour: A Fanfare for Lance
This remarkable piece captures the excitement, physical challenge, intensity and, ultimately, the thrill and sense of accomplishment a rider might experience during such a grueling and demanding physical trial as Le Tour de France. Both tonal and non-tonal compositional materials, some indeterminate and serial techniques, special percussion (a six-tom-tom cluster, heavy chains and four metal plates) along with traditional and non-traditional development procedures are used –impressing upon listeners, through sound, a sense and feel of competitive bicycling, from the point of view of the athletes themselves. In hopes of imbuing the music with the flavor of the various cultures coming together for this contest, the composition contains extant source material as well — including La Marsellaise, The Star-Spangled Banner and a brief reference to The Eyes of Texas.SKU: AL24681 -

March and Cortege of Bacchus
Leo Delibes composed his ballet, “Sylvia,” in 1876. It achieved considerable popularity, and several of the individual numbers were grouped into a suite which orchestras all over the world have played. The March and the Cortege of Bacchus appears in Act III of the ballet, describing the arrival of Bacchus and his followers. The music is martial, lyric, grand and brilliant, building to an exciting conclusion.SKU: AL23320 -

Panopticon Rising
The title implies “all watching,” hinting to the mythological Greek Watchman Panoptes and “opticon” for watching. This original contemporary composition opens with an unassuming docile theme. The transparency is rapidly replaced with driving tutti components that furiously depict a vividly punctuated theme. Reminiscent passive melodies interrupt occasionally, building to an uncompromising conclusion. With a vivid percussion contribution, this energy-packed composition is unparalleled. Bravo! The rhythmic intensity returns, building towards a glorious full ensemble affirmation and bringing this exciting work to a powerful conclusion. Dur: 5:45SKU: HL04003063 -

Prestidigitation (Alto Saxophone Solo with Band)
“Prestidigitation” means sleight of hand or nimble fingers, and describes the alto saxophone soloist in this innovative and compelling work. The triplet rhythms, walking bass line and call-and-response style blend together to give this piece a playful, jazzy flavor. Written for virtuoso saxophonist Dr. Julia Nolan, this composition is a tour-de-force for both the soloist and the ensemble – a powerful addition to the solo saxophone repertoire! Rubies (After Thelonious Monk’s “Ruby, My Dear”)
Composer John Harbison writes: “Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk’s Ruby, My Dear, which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piece reflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk’s tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then in the grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.” Dur: 5:30(Recorded live by the Rutgers Symphony Band – Peter Stanley Martin, guest conductor)
